Trying EFT  for the first time seemed like and exercise in the ridiculous & I guess it might have been if it hadn't helped my problem.  The moment I finished tapping through the protocol, I felt nothing different. I still felt the same anger I had fumed over for the last 5 hours, 3 of that on a long walk. But then...

I went out to the kitchen to talk with  my daughter. When I got there I saw a can of garbanzo beans and thought, " I'll make some hummus. John likes hummus." That was when it hit me.  The thought of John-- who had been the object of my stomping around the neighborhood, no longer made me angry. In fact I suddenly realized his point of view had some validity, and further I recognized that I was pulling something from our past and plopping it down as a "done-deal" into our future. I was afraid something that happened long ago was going to happen again.   "That's not fair," some distant, wise part of my brain said.

I made the hummus and offered it up as 'truce hummus". It went over better than expected; it was a hit.

Normally in the past our struggles have resulted in 5 days of silence, eventually working the problems out, but at great expense of energy and peace.  I don't have those kinds of reserves anymore, & I have decided that that way of relating is not making either of us happy.

Enter EFT. Emotional Freedom Technique.

What is it?
EFT is a way of tapping on certain acupuncture/pressure points while focusing on a specific feeling  and in doing so helping to release or reduce that feeling. That's the simple explanation.

You can use it on all sorts of things like physical complaints, such as backaches, head aches, bruises, joint pain, allergic response, just too mention a few.
You can also use it on emotional issues. It is even being used successfully on dieters, addictions, for clients with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other emotionally charged areas.
You can use it on your pets, and babies. There are no side effects, and it is free to use on yourself. There are individuals, oftentimes therapists, councilors, etc that are certified in using EFT and they will charge for the service. The results are often quite dramatic.

I use a lot of supplements and they can do amazing things for the body, but they can be expensive too.  And like medication, sometimes they don't really address some issues.

Recently a friend of my daughter's got poked in the eye. Not that serious, but she has an odd reaction to her own tears and gets very red and blotchy around her eye. She says it feels like lots of pressure and I think there may be some burning and itching. This happened when we were at a festival. Homeopathic remedies would have been helpful for such a thing, but they were all at home. So I offered to do some EFT. A couple of minutes later her eye had returned to normal.

My daughter said that the friend thought it was  "just the placebo effect" and perhaps it was.
But is there anything wrong with that?

What is the placebo effect? Wikipedia defines it as a "sham medical treatment." How unfortunate, but that does reflect the general attitude.

It's a funny thing that  medicine often scoffs at the placebo effect..
.... Oh its just the body doing what we hope it would do. Heal itself, comfort itself.  Darn body!

My feeling has always been surprise, amazement, & dismay that so  many in the medical community berate the placebo effect when I think they should be pouring millions  of dollars into studying how it works and how can we elicit a placebo response all the time.

Wouldn't that be great? No meds?  fewer surgeries, your body in its top peak healing-machine-mode. Let's not forget that the body heals itself without our intervention much the time. Sometimes it needs some assistance from a specialist, like a doctor  or therapist...

Oh... there's the catch. If we could get our bodies to heal our illnesses, reduce or get rid of our pains and discomforts... what would the point of medicine be and the drug industry in particular? Perhaps that explains the belittlement of the placebo effect.

When I was in nursing school  I learned that the placebo effect accounted for up to about 35% of the positive outcomes for medical treatment, including  medication & surgery.
Imagine my surprise and yours too, to learn that in some cases up to as much as 70-90% of positive outcomes have been attributed to the placebo effect.!

When a medication is getting a 70 % positive response rate that is considered excellent.  However, it begs the question, how much is caused by the placebo effect? You won't hear much out of the drug companies about that.

So frankly it doesn't concern me that my daughter's friend thinks that "it was just the placebo effect"  If EFT provides a reliable way to tap into the placebo effect (no pun intended), then so much the better.

However,  the placebo effect  explanation does not explain  why it works so well on animals and babies.

If you go to Emotional Freedom Technique Website you can down load a basic instruction Manuel for free and start after you read it. There is a low cost DVD course also available. But you don't need it to get started. This is the founder's site (Gary Craig) and should be your first stop.

If you have a specific problem you may want to Google the problem and EFT and see if you come up with a video, usually on You-Tube of a person doing EFT. They will walk you through the steps and help you find the words to say. There are a lot of videos  can get stared quickly.
